A photo is not a general requirement for a Swiss CV. It is still common, so you can decide consciously whether a portrait suits your application.
arbeit.swiss refers to personal data “where appropriate with an application photo”, which treats the photo as optional rather than mandatory.
When can a photo be useful?
A professional portrait can add a personal element to a traditional Swiss CV when you have a current, suitable photo that fits the company and the chosen design.
When is a CV without a photo sensible?
A no-photo CV is a normal option if you prefer a more neutral document, the employer uses a photo-free process or you do not have a suitable current image.
No photo is better than an unsuitable photo. A strong CV works perfectly well without a portrait.
What makes a good CV photo?
- sharp, current image
- even, pleasant lighting
- quiet background
- natural expression
- well-groomed appearance
- clean crop
Selfies, holiday photos and cropped group pictures are generally poor choices.
Does it need to be taken by a professional photographer?
No. A photographer can produce an excellent result, but a modern smartphone, good lighting and a simple background can also work. The outcome matters more than the device.
Clothing and appearance
Dress for the professional environment. Banking or a traditional leadership role may call for more formality than a technology or creative company.
How current should it be?
There is no fixed age limit. The photo should simply look like you do today.
Photo and CV layout
The portrait should be part of the design rather than placed in a random empty corner. If no photo is used, a good layout should rebalance the space cleanly.
Apprenticeship applications
Swiss career guidance notes that a photo is not compulsory. If you include one, it should be recent, in colour, on a neutral background and not a selfie.
With or without a photo
SwissCVPilot adapts the photo position to the chosen layout and keeps the design balanced without one.
