Applying over 50: show current, relevant experience

Long experience is valuable when it connects to today’s target role. Your CV should stay current, concrete and readable rather than simply becoming longer.

Key point

At 50+, your CV does not need to look artificially “young”. It should show current skills, relevant experience and willingness to adapt. Older, less relevant roles can be much more compact.

arbeit.swiss notes that people aged 50+ make up a significant part of Switzerland’s workforce and provides targeted support for jobseekers in this age group.

Structure a long career

Give most detail to the last 10–15 years when that is where the relevant experience sits. Earlier roles can be grouped with title, employer and dates.

Show what is current

Current tools, methods, training and digital skills should be visible when relevant.

SwissCVPilot tip

An older certificate demonstrates experience. A recent one also shows that your knowledge continues to develop.

Make experience concrete

“30 years of experience” is abstract. Team size, budgets, transformation projects, customer knowledge, processes introduced and mentoring responsibilities are more informative.

Show adaptability with examples

Examples such as implementing a new CRM, moving to a different operating model, building a team or learning current tools are stronger than simply saying “I am flexible”.

Salary

Salary expectations should be based on role, responsibility, market and employment percentage—not only on your previous salary, and not automatically discounted because of age.

RAV and viamia

arbeit.swiss describes assessments, application courses and employment or training measures for 50+ jobseekers. viamia can also provide career assessments from age 40 under its eligibility rules.

In the interview

Keep the focus on today’s role: what you can contribute, what changes you have already handled and why this position interests you now.

Weight your experience instead of deleting it

SwissCVPilot lets you give relevant roles more detail and keep older positions concise.
