Swiss apprenticeship application

How to list your school education on a CV

Primary school and lower secondary school: state your Swiss school history clearly and avoid common translation traps.

In short

School name + city + educational level or grades attended is usually enough. Put your current school first. Kindergarten normally does not need to be listed.

Swiss school levels

School education is important when you apply for an apprenticeship because you may not yet have much work experience. Compulsory education consists mainly of primary level and lower secondary level. Cantonal names and subdivisions may differ.

In the Canton of Zurich, primary school is traditionally divided into Grades 1–3 and Grades 4–6. If both stages were completed at the same school, they do not normally need separate CV entries.

CV example

2023 – present
Muster Lower Secondary School, Zurich
Lower secondary level

2017 – 2023
Feld Primary School, Zurich
Primary level, Grades 1–6

Writing and translating the school name

Use the official school name where possible. Translate the type of school if that helps the reader, but do not invent a translation for its proper name.

Important

Do not translate «Schulhaus» as “Schoolhouse”. Do not translate the Swiss «Mittelstufe» as “Middle School” either: “Primary School, Grades 4–6” is clearer.
